Pubic Symphysis Diastasis

You can read more about Pubic Symphysis Diastasis here but basically what it is is when the hormone relaxin aides your pubic bone in spreading/separating in preparation for the birth of a baby.  Well, I went ahead and self diagnosed myself as experiencing this.  Actually, my doctor semi-confirmed it.  You see, I was experiencing some major pain last week whenever I would walk around.  I didn't recall experiencing anything like this when I was pregnant the first time, so I decided to call my doctor just to make sure it was normal.  He said more than likely th epain I was experiencing was my pelvis separating (which I found out today has a name: Pubic Symphysis Diastasis), but it could also be the baby simply rubbing me the wrong way.

I learned that this pain is actually one of the main reasons pregnant woman waddle (and yes, I was waddling last week like a champion).  My pain has since subsided significantly.  Occassionally it will hurt, but for the most part I feel alright.  I'm just grateful I didn't experience any of this while I was in California (where we did an immense amount of walking) and of course im grateful it's just another normal side effect of pregnancy.

Since I didn't experince any of this kind of pain with my first pregnancy - and since it took me 2 hours to push Trent out - I'm hoping this means my pelvis is working harder to prepare for this baby, allowing it slip right on out (giving me just enough time to make it to the hospital, of course).  Hey, a girl can dream, right?

root canal - done!
still sore - yes!

Doc said to give it a day or two for the soreness to subside, but he sounded pretty confident my issue is now fixed. Let's hope so.

my toofers

well, I already told you how Monday night went as far as my teeth/mouth. Yesterday was an alright day - nothing a little tylenol didn't fix. Today I woke up feeling great (mouth-wise) and I immediately wanted to cancel my root canal - but of course the Dentist scared me enough on Monday so that I wouldn't cancel. He informed me that if my pain is in fact coming from the tooth he is going to root canal, then chances are the pain i feel right this second is because the pulp in that tooth is dying. Once all the pulp is dead I will no longer be in pain. That is, until the infection starts. Then the pain will be even worse. Aside from pain, if I let the tooth get infected I would have to go on antibiotics, which are worse for the fetus than the pain killers he recently prescribed me. So, for fear of infection and more pain, I decided to definitely go thru with the root canal now rather than later. My mouth actually started hurting again about half an hour ago, so what other choice do I have?!?! I just wish I didn't hate the dentist as much as I do. It's not so much the actually "root canal" that freaks me out - I've had one or two in the past so i know they aren't as bad as everyone says - it's just the feelings and noises and tools and tastes that really bother me. I'm trying my hardest to remain cool and calm. I know that the procedure will be over before I know it and I will hopefully feel 100% again.

my rollercoaster night

I finally got a call back from the dr office about the pain meds. They said I can take them! I was/am still leery about taking them, and decided that I would only take them if I felt it was absolutely necessary. Last night, it was. I took the first couple pills at 4:30pm. They didn't kick in until 7!!!! In the meantime I started wondering if the pharmacy screwed up and gave me something else. Something worse for the baby. But right at around 7pm I got relief. I'd say the pain went down to about a 2 (when it had been about an 8).

Suddenly my jaw feels better and I'm in a much better mood. So what did I do? I started talking. And talking. And talking. I chatted Kevin's ear off. I guess I was making up for a day of silence (between being in pain and being miserable, I didn't speak to many people all day). Even laying in bed when I knew Kevin was half asleep I was still talking.

Around 9:00 or so we got a phone call from an old friend. Apparently one of my old high school friends was killed in a car accident earlier that day. Kelly and I were very close in 9th grade. We cheered together all throughout high school, so we remained friends until graduation, at which point we went separate ways. I think she was one of the few people left in the United Stated who never got a facebook or myspace account. I saw her once 3 or 4 years ago when I had bronchitis - I went to my general practitioner dr because I was so sick and Kelly was working there as the receptionist. With me being sick and her being on the clock we didn't get to talk much, but I remember she seemed so happy with where she was in her life. And she was soooo proud of her little brother. She had several pictures of him on her desk that she showed me. It was cute to see her being the proud big sister (when her and I hung out in 9th grade her little brother was your typical pesky little boy - but when I saw her at the Dr. that day, her brother was in high school and developing into a young man).

So, even though I basically hadn't spoken to Kelly in 9 years (save that one day at the dr), I still hurt my heart to hear that she had passed. I couldn't sleep last night. I couldn't help but shed a few tears for her mother. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family and her closest friends. There's never a good time to lose a loved one, but at Christmas time?!?! It's just so terrible.

I'm sure the news is all over facebook today, but I haven't gotten on yet to check. I wonder what they are saying. I think I will go look now.

my boring update

I realize everyone reads my blog because they want to stay updated on Trent and BBJ, but let's all take a moment out of our busy lives to throw me a pity party real quick. Towards the end of last week I found myself waking up to get ready for work with a very sore jaw. This pain did not last very long - maybe an hour or so - so i automatically thought I was grinding my teeth really hard in my sleep. It hurt so bad when I would wake up that I went as far as to try to purchase a mouth guard over the weekend.

Saturday morning I woke up at 4am with this sore jaw. I found it very difficult to sleep so I went to the living room to watch tv (distraction). I ended up slipping in and out of sleep until 8:30-ish. Once I got up for the day, the pain did not go away like I expected it to. It wasn't as bad as it had been at 4am, but it was still there. Saturday night I was laying in the bed watching tv when the pain got worse. At this point I realize it's not being caused by me grinding my teeth at all. It must be from a bad tooth. Sunday morning, same thing - I was up around 3:30am in pain, and the discomfort hung around all day.

Everybody say it with me: "awwwwwwwwwwwwww"

I knew i'd be calling my dentist first thing Monday morning. Downer: dentist doesn't even open until 10am, ugh. So Monday morning (today) I woke up feeling great. I slept great, i felt great, i was thrilled. I decided I was still going to call the dentist and see what he had to say. Well, it gets to be around 9am and what happens?? my jaw starts hurting again.

"ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

I call the dentist at 10, they ask me to come in at 10:30. done deal. I go in hoping the dentist will say "your pain is clearly being caused by _______". No such luck. He tells me: It could be this, it could be that.

"uuuuuggggggghhhh"

I call my OB/GYN to make sure it's ok for them to take an x-ray. The x-ray reveals very little. Mr. Dentist and I decide to go ahead and give the one tooth a root canal. If that doesn't ease my pain there is a tooth he can re-fill, and another that I have scheduled to have filled in January. He doesn't think the cavity or the filling is causing the pain im experiencing, but it's possible.

So, back to the root canal. He doesn't have time until WEDNESDAY!!!!!! That's fine if the pain goes away, but right this second my face is throbbing. Granted, the pain is probably 85% in my head (no pun intended) since I'm sitting here thinking about the possibility of being in pain for the rest of my life (irrational? perhaps).

Since he can't see me until Wednesday he wanted to write me a prescription for pain medication. You're probably thinking "oh, well at least you get relief until then". But don't forget, im pregnant! Pregnant women aren't allowed to take just any medicine. I'm not even allowed to take Dayquil, i highly doubt im allowed to take this pain killer.

I shouldn't freak out just yet - I put a call in to my GYN about the prescription. Maybe she will tell me it's perfectly safe. We'll see.

I could spend another ten minutes going on and on about how I have to pay for basically the entire procedure out of pocket since I've already reached my dental limit for the year...and how my benefits renew in January (yup, a mere 17 days from now) but I can't wait that long because of the pain i'm in. But I won't bore you.

Needless to say, today has not been a good day. I'm at work trying to stay positive and distracted (if I want to be distracted I probably shouldn't be blogging about it, but whatever) but it's hard. I hate everything about the dentist and I hate any pain associated with anything dental. I HOPE HOPE HOPE my children have good strong healthy teeth forever!!!!

Party's over. Thanks for coming.
