more on potty training

I've mentioned before that Trent is potty trained.  He has been completely potty trained for a few months now and we've been loving the life of awesome undies, better fitting clothes, and less diaper laundry.  He will occasionally wet the bed, but he generally wakes up and makes it to the toilet before he goes.

Just the other day, Kevin taught him how to pee standing up at the toilet.  It's precious and gross at the same time - he'll just rest his little goodies right on the lip of the toilet bowl and pee, often times shooting straight over the bowl onto the floor on the other side.  I had to teach him to stand on his tip toes and use his hand to aim down.  More times than not he still prefers to sit down to pee, but we're making progress.

Claire is not even 18 months old yet but she's already shown some very exciting interest in the potty.  She's even peed and pooped on her own little potty a handful of times, some of which were completely on her own.  Kevin has a 4 day weekend coming up and so we plan to focus hard on potty training her for those few days.  Diapers at nap time and bedtime only. 

While I don't like changing and washing diapers, I just can never seem to get excited about the start of potty training.

ribbit potty

We started the potty training process 6 months ago, when Trent was just over 25 months old. 

While I was excited to have Trent potty trained, I was not looking forward to potty training.  To my surprise, we started strong.  Within a day or two Trent was pulling his own pants down (so long as they had an elastic waistband) and sitting on the trainer potty more times than not.  His trainer potty is a little potty that sits on the floor and looks like a frog - he calls it his "ribbit potty".               

Forget underwear.  He hated them!  He would throw them in the laundry room when he got his hands on them and he'd cry whenever we approached him with them.  It took a couple months before he warmed up to the idea of actually wearing underwear.  Now he asks for them!

For the first month or so I was still putting him in a diaper whenever we'd go out and when he'd sleep.  Before long he was only wearing a diaper when he was with the babysitter(s) and during sleep-time.  One day a couple months ago I decided to cut out the nap time diaper. And a month or so ago we cut out the babysitter-diaper.  Now Trent only wears a diaper to bed at night, and we plan to cut that out soon as well.

Trent recently went 7 days without having an accident - his all time record to date!!!!  He also recently had 3 accidents in one day.  Needless to say it's been a roller coaster from the very beginning, but overall I am extremely proud of his progress.  He has done much better than I ever expected him to.

We still try to remember to take extra undies, shorts, and shoes with us wherever we go.   Sometimes we even bring our own paper towels.  He will normally tell us that he has to potty but sometimes he just goes without warning.

For the last week he's been waking up with a bone dry diaper, so we'll probably be cutting the bedtime diaper out all together very soon.

The main thing we're working on right now is weaning Trent from the trainer potty.  He only just warmed up to the big potty but he still prefers his ribbit potty.  We have this little potty seat that we put on top of the big potty sot hat he doesn't feel like he will fall in.  It's great because it's portable, but at home he will use that lid just about as often as he will use the big potty without the lid.  Just last night Kevin and I started to make him a step stool for the bathroom - I truly believe this will motivate him to use the big potty more, as he will then be able to get up on the big potty by himself.
